Konkurrence Instruktioner

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church was founded in 1853, and is a wonderful and thriving parish in Columbus, Ohio. It is served by the Dominican friars, an international religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church founded by St. Dominic in 1216. The Dominican Order was founded to preach the truth of the Gospel for the salvation of souls. People come to St. Patrick Church from over 50 zip codes in central Ohio to worship at Mass, to be fed by the truth of Christ and the Gospel, and then to go out to bring this truth in love to a world hungry for it. Our parish mission statement is: “Come to the Supper of the Lamb; Bring Christ to a hungry world."

Purpose and Goals:
The primary goal is to create a beautiful and unique logo which will clearly and immediately identify our parish - St. Patrick Catholic Church, Columbus, Ohio.

Priorities of This Logo Set

CONTENTS: This could be used as a tagline effect. Use your imagination. The logo MUST include the words: St. Patrick Catholic Columbus
Optional words:
Church
Founded or Since 1853

SYMBOLS/ICONS IDENTIFIABLE OR RELATABLE TO OUR PARISH FOR IDEAS FOR YOU!

DOMINICAN FRIARS: St. Patrick Church is served by the Dominican friars. Therefore, Dominican symbols are certainly appropriate. There are a multitude of beautiful symbols related to the Dominican order such as:

DOG CARRYING LIGHTED TORCH: A dog carrying a lighted torch in its mouth. It comes from a play on words in Latin: “Dominicanes” sounds like “Domini canes” = “dogs of the Lord.

DOMINICAN COLORS ARE BLACK AND WHITE The Dominican colors are black and white, which are the colors of the religious habit (robe) worn by the friars.

DOMINICAN COAT OF ARMS The Dominican coat of arms (a shield of black and white)—see attached

DOMINICAN MOTTOES Various Dominican mottoes in Latin, such as
“Veritas” (Truth);
“Contemplare and contemplata aliis tradere” (Contemplate, and hand on to others the fruits of your contemplation);
“Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare” (To praise, to bless, to preach).

ST. PATRICK HISTORY AND BACKGROUND: St. Patrick is the patron saint of our parish.
St. Patrick, who lived in the late fourth/early fifth century A.D., was captured as a young man at his home in Britain by raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland. After serving there as a shepherd for six years, he escaped and returned to his home in Britain
Our parish was founded in 1853.

SACRED HEART OF JESUS: The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: this image connects to our parish as being at the heart of central Ohio, and reaching outward to people in over 50 zip codes (In other words people come a very great distance to attend this church).
The flames on the top of the image of the heart are a sign of the fire of love of Christ extending outward to others, like the torch image above.
The rays coming out from the heart can connect to the “coming in” to our church from all over central Ohio and also the “going out” bring the truth of Christ to a hungry world.

OUTLINE OF THE CHURCH: The outline of the front of our church is a possible image, and is recognizable to the people of our parish (see below).

ROSARY: Another possible image is the Rosary, a prayer promoted by the Dominican friars that contemplates the important events of the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of his Mother, Mary..

THE CRUCIFIX OR CELTIC CROSS Another possible image is the cross of Christ, in the form of a crucifix or a Celtic cross (see below)
You will notice that there are many images relating to St. Patrick Church and the Dominican friars. In no way do we expect you to incorporate everything in one logo. These are given just to help you understand our roots and spark some ideas.
Some attached items related to St. Patrick Church and the Dominican Order:

THINGS THAT WE HAVE DETERMINED WE DON'T LIKE
-the overly simple logos are just not working, detail is preferred
-please don't submit five or six different versions but very similar, versions of the same logo in different entries to them all under the same entry

    Good Luck

Of the top nine liked logos:
    - two of the top contenders are using rosary imagery
-four of them are using some sort of imagery of the outside of the church building itself
-five of them contain imagery of the dog holding the torch, dogs with her ears are preferred to dogs with floppy ears, I think German Shepherd
-six of them have borders around them of some sort ( i.e. apparently our counsel likes borders)
    - nearly all of them are using some of the Dominican imagery we provided in some fashion
-nearly all of them have incorporated a cross or crucifix
-the logo should be larger and more powerful and dominate then the actual text itself

    TWO DAYS LEFT!

In an effort to give you all some ideas clues and suggestions here are some hints and ideas from what we have learned so far after taking a vote from our counsel about which logos have been liked and our top contenders

-don't worry so much about color so much as worrying about the concept overall
-verbiage preferred "St. Patrick Catholic Church" then optional Columbus Ohio, 1853, but most are using all of this
-more detailed imagery in the logos seem to be liked more, but not so much detail as it would not be able to be used on a small print scale, for example is it discernible if it was printed on the top left corner of an envelope?

FEEL FREE TO TRY SOME DIFFERENT VARIATIONS OF BLUE AND GREEN, as we are considering changing the official colors but we need to have green ( i.e. lightning them up if needed) as it seems like the blue is so dark it's hiding many elements of your logos

Make sure to look at ALL of the graphics we've attached to the contest to take maximum advantage of some of the ideas that we have thrown at you many of you have only looked at the first two or three whereas there are others that could be incorporated easily to differentiate and make your logo more unique

    Some things we are noticing
-nobody has made any entries taking advantage of the dog holding a burning torch and we think that has some potential
-please try to make sure to incorporate both Dominican and Catholic symbols to differentiate the logo, as our parish represents both
