  Two answers remain - mapbox or mapnik. I invite comments to help me judge the more correct answer. I think mapnik is a superior answer (in the sense that it has more low-level customisation and is free) but cannot find any styling information. In the absence of styling information I cannot say that the 4square 'look' is achievable - even by entrants own commentary.

     mapbox in combination with leaflet.js can achieve styling + animation. ( Example of animation : http://openplans.github.io/Leaflet.AnimatedMarker/
     http://ewoken.github.io/Leaflet.MovingMarker/ )
     Look at leaflet.js website to ensure that this is being used by foursquare http://leafletjs.com/ )

  To be fair I must reject any entries that repeat what a contestant has already submitted. MapBox was mentioned very early on - I can't reward any contestant that repeats what was already said.
