Contest Brief

We are looking for a talented and creative art and graphics designer for a cartoon-style character illustration.

The illustration should portray a person in a realistic but overdrawn and cliché-style scenario with the following characteristics:

- the person must be male, a bit overweight/chubby and average looking
- the person must wear worn jogging pants and preferably a white undershirt (also rather worn and a bit "shabby"-looking)
- said person must be drawn in his (rather poorly-furnished) living room, preferably holding a beer can
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: the person must be drawn in a posing position with a clear focus on his backside, i.e., his buttocks should catch the attention of the viewer
- it is, for instance, imaginable that the character is dancing to a music clip he is watching, however his head should also point to the viewer (e.g., turned over his shoulder), and the person must be in a good mood/smiling (a bit flirtatiously and in an ironic manner)

The nature of the illustration must not be offensive, but rather funny/ironic, entertaining, light-weight, and should make the viewer laugh, although the viewer should imagine the situation to somehow take place.

Further characteristics of the illustration:

- the end format of the illustration must be web-processible (jpg preferred), possible sizes are, e.g., 2460x3480px, 3000x4244px
- the illustration must be in strong, shaded colors as you see in manga cartoons (e.g., see http://img.wiemanga.com/files/img/logo/20120604/201206041112588557.jpg). However, the character should NOT be drawn in manga-style, but in a realistic but overdrawn manner. Good orientations are wallpapers of the GTA series (e.g., http://media.edge-online.com/wp-content/uploads/edgeonline/2013/06/GTAV.jpg, http://www.gta5kaufen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/v_franklin_chop_1920x1080.jpg, http://forums.getpaint.net/uploads/monthly_10_2013/post-99154-0-24176300-1380924884.jpg), however the colors are a bit too dark, and the nature of the illustration should be funnier and not that "hard".

The illustration must be new and unique and will be distributed either in print format or online. The illustration must not possess watermarks or any signatures of the artist, and the artist agrees to transfer all rights (especially distribution) and source files to the employer. With the competition fee all expenses are covered, and payment is released after a signed release is received.

If the competition is completed with full satisfactory the artist will potentially be offered further projects in the future.

If possible start with a sketch, we will comment on submitted entries. Good luck, and we appreciate your creativity and hard work.

Additional information concerning the character (Aug 8, 2014):

- character should be in his 40s (i.e., not young anymore) and a typical "couch potato"
- jogging pants should be preferably gray
- he should not be laughing but enjoying what he is doing, although it should be a bit creepy/embarassing for the viewer

As an orientation, what kind of character we could imagine, see, e.g., http://ilovebritishtv.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/jim-in-undershirt.jpg?w=194&h=127, http://cdn4.fishduck.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/couch-potato.jpg, http://www.rickliebling.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/couchpotato.jpeg

Update concerning the rating (Aug 23, 2014):

- We will initially rate all illustrations that have good potential with 3 stars.
- 4 stars are only assigned to illustrations that are already colored and go well into the direction we imagine
- Sketches with less than 3 stars still need improvement and further work on the submitted idea

All in all please take our individual comments into consideration. As long as the contest is running, all participants have the chance to win.

#2 Thank you for your submission, bava. Sketch 1 on page 1 goes already a bit into the direction we imagine, although the character should be a bit more chubby, not that young, and his backside should be in the focus. Sketch 2 on page 2 is from the proportions not bad (good focus on his buttocks), however his movement should not be very dynamic but rather slow and lazy (a hand could be in his hip, for instance). The face is not what we image so far, therefore we have included updated information concerning the character in the design brief.

#1 This illustration does unfortunately not remotely portray what we asked for in our project description.
