Konkurrence Instruktioner

Hi folks. I'm looking for a design (or redesign) for the cover of an album I'm releasing later this year. My wife designed a mockup character and I threw together a quick cover design idea, but although I like some things about it, in general I think I want something more polished and flashy looking. This is for a kids/family album of comedy sketches (kind of like old-time radio shows), called "The Incredibly Spaced-Out Adventures of Jupiter Jackson."

What I need is EITHER...

1: Take the existing files provided (the background, the cartoon character) and redesign a more attractive layout. You are free to use the background or not, the cartoon character or not, and whatever type of font(s) you want.

OR

2. Design something completely different. It should look fun and attractive for a kids' audience (elementary school age, especially), and probably have some kind of outer space theme to go along with the title. Think zany, funny and creative.

My preference would be for you to do #2 and just start from scratch with something original. I do like the cute cartoon character my wife did, though, but I'm not committed to that... If you do an original design, don't necessarily just copy the mockup, either. I might like something totally different for this, so please be creative.

As far as the text goes, I would need:
"The Incredibly Spaced-Out Adventures of Jupiter Jackson"
"and other crazy comedy sketches by"
"Eric Herman"
As in my mockup, the title and my name should be most prominent. I may end up changing the wording of the title and the subtitle ("and other crazy comedy sketches by"), so whatever you do, make sure you can provide me the layers (PSD file preferred) so I can adjust things later, if needed.

This is a side project for me (I usually do music for kids) and so my budget is very small for this, but if I am happy enough with someone's entry to use it for the cover, then I will quite likely also want to hire that same person for an extra $75-100 to do some other incidental work for the inside of the album, the CD face, etc., to help give the whole package a consistent look and style. I may even hire a different person for some of that other work, and I'm always looking for good illustrators and graphic designers to work with for various projects, so there may be some value in entering even if you aren't the "winner."

The size of the cover should be 5.5 inches wide by 5 inches tall, or in pixels, 1650 x 1500. Don't get too close to the edges with any text or images, though.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT use any licensed imagery (e.g., Star Wars, Disney, etc.).

I will try to provide as much specific feedback as possible as entries come in, so keep an eye on my notes and comments for help with the direction to go, and please ask questions if you aren't sure about something.

Here's a guide to my ratings.
***** 5 stars: I will not award anybody this until the winner is announced, who I will then upgrade from 3-4 to 5 stars when chosen.
**** 4 stars: Great. Will definitely be considered, as is. Might still need a tweak or two, but that can probably be done after the fact if this entry is chosen as the winner.
*** 3 stars: Very good, and will be considered. Might need something more to get it to be a more likely candidate.
** 2 stars: Okay, or good, but something is not right, as far as what I'm looking for.
* 1 stars: Sorry, but it's definitely not what I'm looking for.

Congrats to lemonpanda. To be honest, there were a LOT of entries that I considered, but that one seemed to have the best overall fit for what I had in mind. Thank you so much to everyone who entered. I am in awe of your great talents and look forward to seeing what you might do for future contests and projects!

Sorry again for not keeping up better on the feedback... I shouldn't have held this contest when I also had a 5 day trip right in the middle of it! But to catch up a bit here, #33 is really good, but maybe a little bit too many art styles and fonts and such. It doesn't quite gel. #34 is really cute, but more "cute" than I'm going for with this. #35 and #36 are both great. For #37 I really like the graphics, but not the fonts or arrangement (the title should probably be on top). #38 and #40 are really good.

I like the graphics and layout, but the font isn't good. And a bit too much extrude on the top title, I think.

#29 , #30 . #31 : I would say #31 is probably the best of the three, but I don't like the "B" of "incredibly" and the word "by." Too many different fonts. Otherwise, pretty good.

#19 is great. The only thing I can think is that "Eric Herman" seems a little bland in terms of the font. I don't think it needs to be anything crazy, just a little different than the basic Sans or whatever it is. Also, the sling shot is an interesting touch. I'm not sure it's that fitting (when's the last time kids had those), but it does hearken back to the era that this album is kind of paying homage to, with the old-time radio plays. I'm not saying to remove it... it's just kind of a curiosity. I love the design and layout and the curving font... It feels like "Adventures" could be moved just a tiny bit to the left, and maybe "Spaced-Out" could be just a tiny bit smaller.

      Hello,
Thanks for the great feedback! Here's some revisions done on the fonts. The title fit together more properly this times ("SPACE-OUT" was scales just a tiny bit) and I've did 3 versions for the font of "ERIC HERMAN". The first one is sketchy. The second font has a futuristic touch on it, which I think is fitting for the theme itself. Lastly it the classic serif font, it's nothing special but readable, just wanted to try something different than basic sans. Personally, I liked the sketchy font.
About the slingshot, I were trying to depict him as quite a zanny character. An unconventional space explorer who uses slingshot instead of space gun. I can remove it or replace it with something else if it doesn't fit very well into the theme.
Hope you will like the changes.
      Kind regards,
      LP

#22 : That still isn't the font from #2 , and I'm not crazy about the pose of the character. If you can just use the font from #2 and the original character, I think that will do it.

#21 : I think you were closer as far as the font/title with your first one, #2 . (I'm sorry, I just realized now that in my last comment to you I said to try a font closer to #12 , but I meant #2 .) As far as the character sideways like that, I'm not really sure whether I like it better or not.

#18 : Mmm, still not quite there, and I don't like the drop shadow color. Can you try the font from #12 ? Or maybe a font closer to #17 but different. I'm also not crazy about capitalizing "Adventures" over everything else. One other small thing is that the shape of the world seems a little odd to curve in on the sides. I know the Earth isn't perfectly round, but still...

#9 is really nice. The only thing is the bottom text doesn't look great. The font is boring and should be a little thicker. Also, there's no "K" in Eric. But that's a good style.

That's really great, except for some of the titling. I love how the top line looks ("The Incredibly Spaced Out"), and I like how you have the next part separated ("Adventures of Jupiter Jackson"), but not how the next part looks in terms of the coloring and shape and readability. It's not bad, but I feel like it could be better. And the bottom part is okay, but seems a little small. My name, in particular, should be emphasized a little more.

The look of everything is terrific... except for the character. He looks dull and disinterested. I also prefer him to be a kid, as in the original cartoon. In your depiction he looks more like an adult, or teenager. Could you try it with your background and titling (which I love) and the original cartoon by my wife? Perhaps stylized/shaded a little bit as in #14 .

#17 : I love the look now, especially the kid being on a planet. Not as crazy for the text/titling as before, though. I do like the lines above and below the title.

#2 is great. Maybe just a bit too many stars, though. It almost looks like snow, especially with the character on a white moon/planet, which makes it look like a snowbank. The general look of it is really nice, though.

Another thought is to perhaps emphasize "Spaced-Out" in some way... italicized, different color... I'm not sure what, but I'd like to see that be just a little different. And frankly, I'm not sure it will be better that way... it might not... but I'd like to see it. Overall, it's a really nice look, though as I said above, I think you should try to emphasize "outer space" more than "winter wonderland." :o)

#8 is excellent, except for a couple things... Something looks weird about the rocketship, where the checkerboard pattern has some of the parts missing and it's picking up the background. Also, I really like the general font design and layout, however, the way you have "ADVENTURES" so big, it makes that stand out too much, as if that's the real title. I don't mind "Adventures" bigger, but I would bring the other two lines ("The Incredibly Spaced-Out" and "Jupiter Jack") closer to that in size. Another thought might be to emphasize "spaced-out" instead of "adventures," or italicize that. Great job, though, overall, but I'd like to see it tweaked a bit.

Here's another thought... I like how you have the little creatures and things mixed in there, but now I'm wondering if instead of some of those things (like the glass of lemonade, which doesn't make a lot of sense there), we could have a few other seemingly random things, but which actually allude to elements of some of the other tracks on the album. The other tracks include "Monster League Baseball," (so maybe a baseball in there instead of the glass of lemonade?), "The Math Game," (perhaps a silly math equation, like "2 + 2 = 22") and "Monday Science," which is an NPR spoof about time travel (so maybe a clock, Dali style, or something like that). If you're familiar with the Twilight Zone intro, something in that vein might be good for this.

#7 : I like it, but some of the objects feel too smushed together, like the rocket, sun and planet in the middle, and the moon and planet in the lower right. Also, I'm not crazy about the font style, especially for the part on the bottom, which is hard to read. The coloring is nice, but the cartoon character could be brightened a little bit.

qomiter ( #1 , #3 , #4 , #5 ): I'm really looking for something a little more fleshed out than what you have there. The fonts are pretty bland, and I could do that level of work myself, so I'm hoping for a little something more. Thanks so much for the entries, though.
