Canvas Magnifying Glass

Contest Brief

I need a magnifying glass algorithm / transformation for custom vector drawing in HTML5 . The algorithm must be efficient enough to attach the magnifying class to the mouse cursor and drag it over a full-screen canvas.

HOWEVER!!!

This magnifying glass is non-standard in that it also has this additional area around the centre wherein the material underneath is reduced in size but still visible. This area visually connects the magnified material to the unaffected material to make it easy and pleasant to inspect a detailed picture through this magnifier without loosing context of where you are.

The winning entry would set up a canvas element onto which all that is being drawn using the canvas drawing functions can be viewed at 2 times magnification without loss of quality/resolution using a magnifier that affects around 20% of the screen.
To help visualise the result, consider the attached image. For more inspiration, consider how the OS X tray magnification used to work (and still does provided you choose tray magnification in your preferences).

I want to award the prize now, based on the entries already received. If you are still "working on it" I am afraid you've been beaten by someone quicker. Congratulations to the winner.

Working it out with one and paper? Awesome. It would be ideal to "see" the underlying canvas through a transformation matrix, but unfortunately the 2d context for canvas elements support very limited transformations. If it wasn't for that limitation, the solution would have been too simple to warrant a contest such as this.

Magnifiers that obscure any part of the original picture will be regarded as invalid entries. In stead of obscuring any part, it must show all parts of the original at all times, which will require that some parts are shown at reduced magnification.
