Five Terrific Tips to Become a Top Freelance Translator

Pat yourself on the back: you’re probably smarter than average, thanks to your ability to speak more than one language. (And: your social skills are most likely very well-rounded, too!)

A New York Times article reports: “The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be more basic: a heightened ability to monitor the environment. ‘Bilinguals have to switch languages quite often — you may talk to your father in one language and to your mother in another language,’ says Albert Costa, a researcher at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Spain. ‘It requires keeping track of changes around you in the same way that we monitor our surroundings when driving.’ In a study comparing German-Italian bilinguals with Italian monolinguals on monitoring tasks, Mr. Costa and his colleagues found that the bilingual subjects not only performed better, but they also did so with less activity in parts of the brain involved in monitoring, indicating that they were more efficient at it.”

If only your clients knew how good you were as well, then they wouldn’t be scouting around for other people to do their translation work, right?

Don’t worry: promoting your translation services and getting more work on Freelancer.com isn’t rocket science. We went through some of our top freelance translators’ profiles to help you understand what it takes to have an awesome Freelancer translator profile.

Here are our five terrific tips:

Take Certifications

Gain the confidence of potential employers by showcasing your mastery of various languages, like what DeSource did. Browsing through their profile, you can see top marks in various languages, such as French, German, Spanish, Turkish, and Italian, which proves that they’re able to deliver translation services in those languages really well.

Get Stellar Reviews

If eTranslators’s numerous certifications weren’t enough to convince you that they were really good at what they did, then the 200-plus client reviews on their profiles will surely do. Employers were all praises for their speed, accuracy, and work ethic, which would surely be a good sign for eTranslator’s future prospects.

Spruce Up Your Portfolio

Like dianita24, use your past projects to help you land new jobs. You can either practice on some online documents or websites, or use previous work to highlight your translation skills. (Note: if you’re going to use your projects with your previous employers, make sure to ask for permission first!)
